Taiwan still hopping mad about Taekwondo disqualification

You know something is a big deal when the Taiwan Apple Daily people asks for a story to be dubbed and subbed into English so that they can stick it on their Mandarin language site! They even told me to try and sound extra OUTRAGED! in my voiceover.

People in Taiwan really are full of outrage about this and are determined to tell their side of the story. Now many non-Taiwanese might ask what the big deal is. Sure, it sucks for the athlete, but why is this the top news in Taiwan two days running? I think our Facebook Fan “Gerard Fullsack” put it best when he said “well, the american equivalent would be if the giants went to the world series, and got disqualified for using the wrong baseball bat, or baseball.” That’s exactly right…except Yang Shu-chun passed equipment inspection and wasn’t even wearing the supposedly problematic sensors on her heels when the match began. And as nma.tv commenter “JY” put it, “WTF, WTF?”

As for the conspiracy theory that Chinese and Korean officials were in cahoots…erm, let’s not even go there. The government of Taiwan is “mulling a complaint.” Taiwanese nerds have hacked the Asian Taekwondo Union website. According to a poll conducted by the Apple Daily, 80 percent of Taiwanese are in support of a boycott of stuff from Korea. This is including the Korean soap operas, people, so you know we’re really mad.

Taiwan rallies behind disqualified taekwondo competitor

On Wednesday, Taiwanese Taekwondo gold-medal hopeful Yang Shu-chun was thrown out of her opening bout by judges citing illegal equipment at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Yang broke down in disbelief and sat in protest for an hour. Yang and her coach say all their equipment were cleared by the judges before competition began. Taiwan has rallied behind Yang, suspecting that Chinese judges exerted influence to get Yang disqualified.

Liverpool ownership battle comes full circle

Guest Starring Marc Ressang as ‘Liverpool Player’.

When American businessmen Tom Hicks and George Gillett bought Liverpool Football Club in February 2007 they initially received a hero’s welcome. But the adulation faded quickly as promises made to fans about a new stadium and the club’s debts were broken.

It didn’t take long for the fans to become fed up with Hicks and Gillett, sparking protests imploring the Americans to sell up.

As the banks closed in, Hicks and Gillett were forced to make way. The club’s new owners were free to take control of the club and make an impression with the fans.

Randy Rooney scores own goal

England and Man United star striker Wayne Rooney is in the headlines again. A prostitute known as ‘Premiership Jen’ claims Rooney slept with her seven times last year while his wife Coleen was pregnant. She said that Rooney had a threesome with her and a friend. She said the sex was “boring.” It’s not the first time Rooney has been caught out. In 2004, it was reported Rooney had visited grandmother Patricia Tierney for sex. The England management has given their star striker the go-ahead to play for his country, while the rest of the squad have rallied around him. But it’s not all good news. This latest scandal could spell the end of his two-year marriage to childhood sweetheart Coleen. England fans, however, are more concerned that the story will lead Rooney to perform as badly as he did at the recent World Cup.

‘Thumbs-up’ on YouTube if you like Premiership Jen better than Patricia Tierney.
