Tommy Tuberville dines and dashes on Texas Tech

Kliff Kingsbury is the new head football coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders after Tommy Tuberville made another classless exit, leaving Lubbock for the University of Cincinnati. Tech fans are happy to see Tuberville go, but they can’t help but feel insulted by how he did it.

Tuberville, who in 1998 said he would have to be carried out of Ole Miss in a “pine box” only to leave for Auburn a week later without saying goodbye to his players, did it again on Friday, when he left a table of recruits at a Lubbock restaurant without saying a word and never came back. The next day, the recruits and everyone else heard that Tuberville was the new football coach at Cincinnati.

Tommy Tuberville was at dinner with juco offensive lineman Devonte Danzey and other prospective recruits on Friday night when Danzey asked him how long he planned to be with the Red Raiders. Tuberville answered the question in an elliptical way and disappeared shortly thereafter. He didn’t say goodbye and no one saw him leave.

It’s all for the best. Tuberville didn’t like West Texas and Tech fans never warmed up to Tuberville, who arrived in 2010 after the controversial firing of the popular Mike Leach. Under Tuberville, Tech missed a bowl game for the first time in 11 years. And Tuberville failed to beat Texas.

Replacing Tuberville is Kliff Kingsbury, a former Tech quarterback threw 95 touchdown pass between 1998 and 2002. Kingsbury, the second-youngest BCS coach at 33, comes to Tech from Texas A&M, where he ran the SEC’s most potent offense and mentored Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Kingsbury is a better fit for the Red Raiders. He’s an offensive guru like Mike Leach, and his Air Raid offense is an iteration of the pass-happy system Leach developed. Tuberville kept Leach’s system largely in place but the former SEC coach never liked winning games 51-46. Kingsbury promises aggressive play on both sides of the ball, and that’s exactly what Texas Tech fans want from their team.
