Chua extols the virtues of strict parenting. Her daughters were never allowed to play with friends, have sleepovers or watch TV.

She also boasted of how she coerced one of her daughters into mastering a difficult piece of music.

The article has provoked a fierce debate, with some praising the model of parenting Chua describes.

Come on, she is not a Chinese. In China, we don’t do this, she is an American, please do not label Chinese moms, we are different. She should feel shamed to call herself a ‘Chinese’.

Love the word >>SUPERIOR<< and NWO censorship which is plenty full in Australia. For me personally, Chinese doesn't fit under word "mom" category…but it may be different for you…whatever you want to turn into or not…anyhow…

Kids do need to be pushed somewhat, but her ways are extreme: no playdate, no tv, games, nothing…her kids probably will carry her arrogance and can only live in a glowing shell their mom created for them. I watched the video and read that linked article. She’s so confident of her methods without considering the downsides. I can see some advantages to the “Chinese style”, but the result is overly-protected kids who have a hard time knowing how the hell to manage their own life — especially in an emotional context — once they are on their own. The result is them staying in the home for a long time, doing a total 360 later on, or getting into dangerous situations on their own b/c their pretty naive.

First of all, her kids are Jewish, raised Jewish. Second, she is not Chinese, but Filipina-Chinese born in USA. Hardly Chinese woman. Bully yes. She will regret this book rest of her life.

First of all, what constitutes “eastern” and “western”? The actions described in the video fit what we in the west call “stage moms”, so that can hardly be claimed to be something that only happens in the east. So are you really asking which is superior between lax parenting and overly-strict parenting? If so, then *neither* one is good, both are extremely bad, just in different ways and for different reasons.
